For weeds in patio joints, start with hand removal and regular sweeping. Moss and algae need a different approach: brush off loose growth, clean with a product suitable for the paving and address damp, shaded areas where practical.
No treatment guarantees a permanently weed-free patio. Roots may survive below the surface, new seeds arrive, and moss or algae can return when conditions remain favourable. The aim is manageable upkeep, not a one-off cure.

Deal with unwanted growth on walking routes before it becomes slippery or obscures the joints. Remove rooted weeds before they set seed where possible, and clean moss or algae when they affect grip. How to Get Rid of Moss and Weeds
1. Remove Weeds and Loose Growth by Hand
Pull small weeds from the joints, removing as much root as practical. A narrow weeding tool can help, but avoid levering against slab edges or digging out sound pointing. Revisit deep-rooted weeds if they regrow.
Brush away loose moss and collect the debris. Use a brush suitable for the surface; metal bristles can mark some paving. Keep walking routes clear while you work.
2. Clean the Surface Without Homemade Weed-Killer Recipes
Do not use a vinegar, salt and washing-up-liquid mixture as a general patio treatment. Vinegar can damage acid-sensitive stone, especially limestone; salt can harm nearby soil and plants. Killing visible leaves does not mean the roots have been removed.
Baking soda is not a universal weed-control method, and boiling water is not a permanent cure. Pouring boiling water around paving also carries a scalding risk. Hand removal and a suitable cleaning method are more practical starting points.

3. Choose a Treatment Labelled for the Job
If manual methods are insufficient, check whether a product is authorised for your intended use. In Ireland, home gardeners should use only weedkillers approved for amateur use and follow the label. A lawn treatment is not automatically suitable for a patio or other hard surface.
Check the target weeds or growth, permitted surfaces, application conditions, protective equipment, runoff precautions and when people or pets may return.
